Copernicus Sentinel-2A – Data Loss Due to Optical Communication Payload Anomaly

An anomaly affecting the Optical Communication Payload of Sentinel-2A has resulted in the loss of approximately 30% of the data sensed between 07 and 08 May 2025. The affected acquisitions were not successfully downlinked and are therefore permanently unavailable (datatakes impacted: 51560-3, 51562-1, 51562-2, 51566-1, 51566-2, 51568-1, 51569-1, 51569-2, 51570-1, 51571-1, 51571-2, 51571-3).
Additional data acquired in the following hours may also be impacted. Mitigation measures are being implemented to address the root cause and prevent recurrence.
A follow-up communication will be issued once the anomaly is resolved and normal operations are restored.

Copernicus Sentinel-3 OLCI and SLSTR L1 and L2 Products: New Processing Baseline

We are pleased to announce a new processing baseline ID for Copernicus Sentinel-3 concerning the following products:
- OLCI L1
- SLSTR L2 FRP
- SLSTR L2 LST
- SYN L2 SDR (minor impact)
- SLSTR L1 (minor impact)
- Minor bug correction on SLSTR L1 IPF + an updated of the SL1: bug fixes and update of the VISCAL threshold used in the OLQC module (reducing the number of DEGRADED products)
- Minor bug correction on SY_2_SYN products aligning the dimension of OLCI removed pixel with OLCI products
- Major evolutions in SLSTR L2 products:
- SL2 LST: increase of the number of processed biomes to be consistent with CCI LST classification and review of the LST coefficients. This evolution will have impact on LST values, LST uncertainties values, biome classification and cloud mask.
- SL2 FRP: bug correction improving the flagging of F1 downscan anomaly and the flagging of saturated area. These evolutions have very limited impact on the FRP product
- SL2 FRP: removal of all fires detected using S5/S6 radiometric measurement and detected during the twilight period (i.e. associated with a Sun Zenith Angle between 85 and 102 degrees). This evolution will reduce the number of false alarms detected during twilight.
- SL2 LST: increase of the number of processed biomes to be consistent with CCI LST classification and review of the LST coefficients. This evolution will have impact on LST values, LST uncertainties values, biome classification and cloud mask.

Copernicus Sentinel-5 Precursor (S5P) products improvement

With the upcoming update of the Copernicus Sentinel-5 Precursor (S5p) operational ground-processing system, planned for March 20th 2025, a new updated processor will be released for the following products:
UPAS v02.07.01 for: Formaldehyde (HCHO), Sulphur Dioxide (SO2), Cloud Fraction, albedo, and top pressure (CLOUD), Ozone Total Column (O3), Ozone Tropospheric Column (O3_TCL).
The main impact on the data products is as follows:
Ozone Tropospheric Column – O3 TCL: Internal hotfix.
The NL-L2 processor (UV Aerosol Index, Aerosol Layer Height, Methane, Carbon Monoxide, Nitrogen Dioxide, and O3 Profile) will remain unchanged at version 02.08.00.
The processor for the product S-NPP VIIRS – Cloud auxiliary product will remain unchanged (version 02.00.03).
Full detailed information will be provided within the Product Readme Files after the operational switch.
Please note that NRT products for data acquired during the downtime period will be not generated. After the successful deployment of the new system, version numbers of the first orbit generated with the new version of the S5p operational processors both, in NRT and OFFL, will be provided.
